SHIPMENTS of personal computing devices (PCD) to markets in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) suffered a huge decline in the second quarter of 2022.
The International Data Corporation (IDC), which revealed this in a document, categorised PCD to include desktops, notebooks, workstations, and tablets. It disclosed that shipment suffered a sharp year-on-year decline of 16.3 per cent.
The global technology research and consulting firm’s newly updated Worldwide Quarterly PCD Tracker showed that PCD shipments across the MEA region totaled 5.0 million units in Q2 2022, which is the lowest volume of devices shipped into the region since Q1 2020.
IDC’s Associate Research Director for client devices in the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa, Fouad Charakla, said: “Declines were witnessed in most markets across the region, including key markets such as Turkey, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Israel, Egypt, and Nigeria.”
Charakla explained that the decline stemmed from both commercial end users and home users, with demand from the latter segment declining at a much faster rate. He added: “The rising cost of living is inhibiting consumer demand and spending across markets throughout the region.”
From a product category perspective, PC shipments experienced a soft decline of 2.6 per cent year on year in Q2 2022.Lenovo remained in top position, recording a huge increase in shipments year-on-year. HP Inc. remained in second place after suffering a sharp decline, while Dell maintained its position in third place.
Specifically, Lenovo grew its market share from 23.8 per cent in Q2, 2021to 29 per cent in the same period Q2. HP however, suffered decline from 23.2 per cent last year to 18.9 per cent as at June 2022 ending. Same faith befell Dell Technologies, whose 16.7 per cent Q2 2021 growth fell to 16.1 per cent, a year after. Other vendors, according to IDC, also fell from 36.3 per cent in Q2, 2021 to 36.0 per cent by Q2, 2022.
MEANWHILE, IDC said the tablet market experienced a steep 33.3 per cent decline in shipments year on year. It reported that Samsung continued to lead in terms of unit share, while Apple climbed to second place, followed by Lenovo in the third position.
Specifically, in the MEA region, Samsung’s market share of 40 per cent inQ2, 2021 crashed to 33.2 per cent in Q2, 2022; Lenovo also witnessed same, dropping from 13.5 per cent to 8.2 per cent, Apple however, grew from 9.9 percent market share in Q2, 2021 to 14.9 per cent as at June, 2022. Other brands, according to IDC, collectively deepen their market share from 36,6 per cent Q2 2021 to 43.7 per cent in Q2, 2022.
